Janus

Janus is a unique pocket throw from Zero Gravity that explores the boundary between yo-yo and object play. Born from the ideas sparked during development of the KnuckleYo, Janus is a slimline yo-yo designed to fully transform into a playable coin using removable Side Effects.

The design began with the coin itself. Zero Gravity wanted Janus to feel authentic both as a yo-yo and as a manipulation coin, without sacrificing performance on either side. After extensive testing, a 45.5mm diameter was chosen as the ideal balance, large enough for comfortable yo-yo play while still effective for coin manipulation.

Thickness played a critical role in the final feel. Too thin would limit performance, too thick would reduce usability as a coin. The final 7.8mm thickness delivers a compact profile with solid functionality, resulting in a 23.7g weight in coin mode that feels natural in hand.

To make the transformation possible, Janus uses One Drop Side Effects. This system allows for complete removal of the axle and bearing seats, giving Janus a true coin-like feel when disassembled. It also opens the door to wearable and worry-coin style play, adding another layer of versatility.

Machined from 6061 aluminum, Janus features carefully shaped cup walls that support coin manipulation while maintaining proper weight distribution for yo-yo play. Despite its size, Janus is not a novelty or micro throw. It is a fully functional pocket yo-yo that can be played responsive or unresponsive, then converted into a manipulation coin when disassembled.

The name Janus comes from Roman mythology, where Janus is the god of duality, transitions, and beginnings, often depicted with two faces and featured on ancient coins. The mismatched sides and engravings reflect this dual nature, reinforcing Janus as a throw designed to live in more than one world.
