centroid-yo-yo-by-yoyofriends
Centroid

Centroid started with a goal that flipped yoyofriends’ usual order: build a performace based 1A yo-yo first, then think about fingerspin. Since 2022 the brand had poured time into fingerspin throws like the AOE, Rio, Helix, and Strand, but none of them matched a true competition yo-yo for 1A. After shelving an early -cut series profile that felt too close to the Cheatcode, the team spent three months gathering customer and retailer feedback and landed on the Graviton / Replicant profile, one of the most beloved shapes in the lineup.

The breakthrough came right after the first prototype, when Peter from the manufacturing team suggested a groove on the outer cup. It lets the yo-yo self-tilt into a fingerspin even at a low angle and opens the door to a trick called the corkscrew. Technicians worked past midnight so players could test it at the World Yoyo Contest in Japan, and the prototype was finished at 3am. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with the profile’s weight distribution excelling at both performance and fingerspin. After WYYC, retail partner REWIND flagged that a sharp groove might hurt hands, so the team smoothed it, putting customer safety ahead of pure performance. They also got the blessing of Jeff Pang, a longtime friend whose earlier work pioneered this style of fingerspin cap.

The name comes from the centroid, the geometric center of a shape, which is right where the fingerspin hub sits. Centroid will be the first in a series of related names, and likely the only one to combine performance and fingerspin this fully. If you want a yo-yo that does both, give it a throw.
