Video converter

Does anyone know of a good free video converter?
I need to go from MP4 to WMV.
I’ve tried a couple, but I keep losing quality.

PS - if the mods need to move this that’s cool. I just thought more people would see it here.

I’ve had good luck with format factory.

See one of the problems is Mp4 is a compressed file type WMV is non compressed, so a loss of quality is for the most part inevitable. Good luck finding a software though!

Actually .wmv files ARE compressed files. The problem is when converting you have to make sure the bit rates match.

Chrome has a free extension that converts video files in case anyone else is looking for something like that.

Converting from a compressed format to an uncompressed format wouldn’t cause a loss of quality; that doesn’t really make sense.  You’re going from less information to more information, meaning you wouldn’t necessarily lose information (you still could though, but I’m guessing not).

If so, then above argument is moot.

http://ffmpeg.org/ is what I have used in the past to convert video and audio stuff.  It is a command line program with a lot of options that you probably will have to fiddle with before you get exactly what you want, but it has soooo much power it’s ridiculous.

There is a gui for ffmpeg that works nice: http://www.hecticgeek.com/2013/12/convert-audio-video-ffmpegyag/
Available for both windows 7 & 8, and various linux distros in deb or rpm format. The links in the article are for win 8 and debian, but you can google for other variants.

Banned for suggesting a gui (oops, wrong thread).

Silly boy, guis make the world go round…

I’m literally making this post with lynx just for you. I hope you appreciate it because this isn’t easy.

Video Lan VLC player might be able to convert from mp4 to WMV.

I believe that VLC uses the same backend as ffmpeg, so they should be about the same in terms of quality of output.

Try: clipconverter.cc

Its amazing
