We are using the same technique as we did on the Seven Summits and the Kuntosh 5000QV: the Legendary Terrarian is made from 7075 aluminum alloy (the original is 6061) and the weight distribution is changed so the total weight is less than the original, even though 7075 is more dense (weighs more). What that means is it looks the same to your eye in play as the original, but it feels totally different. You will notice the visual changes in the cup. What’s the difference between these two kinds of yoyos? I’m certainly not saying that the latter yoyos don’t play well (and actually, it’s probably harder to find a bad playing yoyo than it is to find a good one these days). In a lot of cases, these are yoyos which, at first, I have felt are really nice.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt’s hard to identify, but this distinction was at the forefront of my mind throughout the process of designing the Panorama. My primary objective was to create a yoyo that falls into the former category, a yoyo that is never far from your reach - An authentic yoyo. In order to make the Panorama a reality, it was absolutely essential to capture this.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHigh walls for increased control, rims that seem to adapt to your hand on the catch. These are some of the traits of authentic yoyos from which I took inspiration during the Panorama design process. However, these things alone do not make an authentic yoyo. After all, sometimes high walls can cause stress, and weight distribution designed to maximize spin time can cause a yoyo to feel out of control. Similarly, nice playing yoyos do not always transcend the era in which they were created.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePanorama is a yoyo built with all of these things in mind, and in keeping with the sensibilities of the modern competitive scene - like a hybrid of cutting-edge tech found in a well-tuned F1 machine combined with the flavor of a classic car from the 50s. A yoyo which seems to consistently appear in your hand and thus becomes a part of your lifestyle. A yo-yo made for competitive play was the number one request from the fans. Given that Droid is to be a SE yo-yo, it is critical to have an outer ring design instead of an inner ring one and stainless steel was the only material I felt was suitable for the outer rings. An outer ring design necessitated a material that was durable enough as the rings would be in constant contact with the player’s hands. Brass was not an option as it is prone to discoloration, particularly with repeated hand contact.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDroid was mainly inspired by two yo-yos, the One Drop CiTizen and Turning Point Diaspora. It's general shape is similar to the CiTizen, a hair larger and wider, and given Droid’s bimetal design it has significantly more rim weight and torque. The rim’s shape is inspired by the Diaspora, a 54 mm diameter signature yo-yo of world champion Shinji Saito. The lower walled V-shaped catch zone of Droid makes it geared more towards competitive play. The Droid’s SE hub is similar to Gravity, with a circumferential groove transitioning to an up-sloping arc to its peak. RSO will be using this SE hub design for future models as I prefer it over the standard angular SE hub One Drop uses.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDroid comes with a black delrin canister, CNC machined by FPM. RSO yo-yos are prototyped extensively, and the journey is comprehensively documented. Considerable time is also spent on the story, artwork, engraving, accessories and packaging for each release. These add production costs to each yo-yo, but RSO has been able to keep its prices similar to (if not lower than) many companies who mainly sell bare-bones titanium yo-yos today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor an RSO yo-yo named Sushi, the intricate details had to be absolutely perfect. Since the release of Gravity, I have been brainstorming for unique shapes that differ from the primarily organic RSO lineup. One of the most coveted RSO yo-yos is the titanium Bowl: Japan Edition, which had a ramen theme. Naturally, making a second yo-yo inspired by another Japanese food staple was always on the cards.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow, this may sound ridiculous, but for this model I went to great lengths to ensure that the yo-yo halves would look like they were cut from a sushi roll! The pieces form a cylinder when lined up together.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSushi is not a rim-weighted yo-yo, less so than Gravity. Sushi had to weigh less to avoid a “heavy” playfeel. Each half of Sushi is almost 1g lighter than a Gravity half. With the included disc SE, Sushi plays unhurried, controlled and steady, just like an omakase meal you would have at a top tier Michelin starred sushi restaurant. Because of that we decided to make a new version.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOne of the “weaknesses” of the Deep State is that doing modern 1A tricks can be really challenging. For anyone not used to responsiveness, 1A is going to be difficult, however, the narrow width and narrow gap also add to the challenge. For the Deeper State we wanted to improve this aspect so you’ll find it’s a little bigger in diameter and a fair bit bigger in width. Additionally the gap is narrow at the bottom of the catch zone to help with responsiveness, but unlike the Deep State, the top of the catch zone opens up wide. These features make it easier to land string tricks and it’s more stable than the Deep State. Even though it’s a bigger yo-yo, the overall weight is the same or lighter than the Deep State (depending on the Side Effects used). Don’t get us wrong, it’s still going to be challenging to hit your string tricks, but things are much improved in that regard.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe decided to use a tapped axle instead of Side Effects on the Deeper State just to mix things up. In the Giant Book Of Machining (Machinery’s Handbook) there is a formula for how many threads of engagement are needed. This formula doesn’t take into account the use case, but going strictly by the book, 16mm length is the minimum length for correct engagement with a 4mm diameter axle. 12mm length is borderline. Of course in the yo-yo use case, there really isn’t any load so it comes down to being careful when you take the yo-yo apart. 16mm is more secure and less likely to have issues. You can just feel when you screw the yo-yo together how solid it feels. Project 2 could be. Having previously exhausted a plethora of prototype rounds on the Markmont. Classic, we had some clear specs and play features to bring into the fold.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDesign wise, it was very important to me that we nail a balance of both playfulness and stability. MP has a certain unique hefty “thud” like feeling when it hits a sleeper. At bigger yoyo scale however, this would not be “fun” lol. So for the MP2 we scaled up all dimensions from the original MP, introduced a catch zone “lip” for less string gap rub to improve sleep time, and re-distributed the mid-weight to enable more play speed variation.
