The "First Impressions" Thread

So you just got a new throw… What thoughts run through your head during those first few tosses?

I’ll get it started.

Just threw a BiMetal for the first time… (Initial Thoughts)

Good lord these spin long.

Very smooth.

Ouch… The kickback is real…

Man these spin long.

Why so stable, am I cheating?

Ooh. Shiny…

Smells good. (Don’t ask)

Still spinning

This thing is toast if I ding it…

Got that carpet doe.

Does this thing know what tilt is?

Maybe this is why everybody so hype.

Them rims shiny bruh.

Stop smudging!

Gotta get that microfiber

Still spinning…

Getting matching kicks tomorrow

That just about sums up my first few times throwing my Rainfly.

I’m not going to lie here, I actually did sniff the Yeti. It smells like clay.

Usually it depends on the yoyo. I’ve gone from “did I make a good choice” to “holy smokes this things crazy!”

Typically the yoyos I’m initially unsure of start to grow on me.

Baisically my thoughts about iyoyo steel except there was a thought of “these things fingerspin forever (like 2 min without even trying)!”

First thoughts on throwing the Dream TI:

Can’t believe I got it

Feels smooth

Why are there tons of finger prints?

gets the crystal cloth

This thing is super stable

Very agile and maneuverable

Sounds niice, when binding and string hits

Kickback… ouch, but still feels nice

I need to buy more Ti’s

Slowly becoming my favorite

Sums up my first initial thoughts of throwing the Dream Ti.

Me throwing the CLYW Scout, my first high end.

Wow! This is SMOOTH!

Really smooth.

This is the most amazing throw I’ve ever tried!

I’d better be extra careful not to ding it because i would be SO upset if i did ding it.

DING.

SOB.

Got the yeti today. Only got a few throws in before I went skating in the city.

Didn’t feel that amazing. Feel there was more hype than anything but then again I didn’t get to play it much. This was the same with the puffin 1 but now i love it. I’ll be playing this yeti all day tomorrow at work so ill see if my thoughts have changed. Hopefully so.

Update: switch the stock string out with some kitty and made a worlds difference. Wow is this different and fun. Seems promising

Literal skating? Skateboarding?

I do a little, heel flips, kickflips, working on tres ;D

well I went downhill longboarding but I can’t do some trick skating. Kinda suck but I can do kflips, heels. Can do a boardslide on a low rail. But tonight, we went to new haven city to bomb some hills. Pendy slides. 180 standup slides. Bombed 6 story parking garages. City skating is fun.

First impressions of the Evora:

  • wow, that packaging, though!
  • so elegant
  • why am I gawking? Where’s the nearest string?
  • Ermagerd. Feels amazing on the throw. No kickback, yay!
  • What. The. Actual. $%*?? WHY SO SMOOTH?
  • Oh gawd. I’m finally going to be afraid to ding a yoyo.
  • Why is this so stable? I thought the less rim weight would mean less stability, but this thing pwns!
  • Oh man. Still had lots of spin left when I hit that bind. Surprising!
  • Wonder how my finger-grind binds will work out? Oh, oops. I think I need to be more precise on my finger grinds; that catch zone shape isn’t making it brainless
  • Oh there we go. Yeah. Gotta be more precise and careful, but man, this thing actually grinds!
  • This… feels… like it couldn’t reasonably be made with Aluminum. Might be placebo or confirmation bias. Not sure. Just feels… titanium-y…
  • I don’t need moar yoyos. Ever.

Naturally, I will get moar yoyos. It’s inevitable. But yeah. It’s that good.

First impression for my first unresponsive metal. Yoyofactory Shutter.

Why is it tilting.
Its so smooth.
Wow bind.
Let me try brain twister.
Oh this thing sleeps forever. I can do 100 bts.
Let me switch the bearing with the koncave. Uses plier bearing broken.
Learn mach 5.

Yoyofactory cyborg 2.0

This is so smooth.
This is so smooth.
Wow.
I love it .
This is so smooth.
This is so smooth.
Is it even spinning. Bearing is silent.

Its soSMOOTH. LOVE IT

Luftverk Evora
Purple Glass Dust Anodized

Nice sleeve on the box.
Cool exploded view on it.
Whaaaaat, magnetic box, nice touch.
It looks so cozy in the perfectly cut foam.
Nice certificate of authenticity.
#27 of 35, cool.
This iridescent purple is amazing.
Let’s string this thing up.
Butane flame Ammo fits it well.
Ceramic bearing a bit loud.
But holy crap it’s smooth.
Very comfortable shape.
Nice and airy on the string.
This thing is spectacular.
Actually grinds pretty darn well.
Dat titanium ringing.
Stable and long spinning.
But far from overly rim-weighted.
Very balanced feel.
Can’t stop smiling, too much fun!

I think I may have a new favorite. Outstanding job Mr. Pang. Absolutely worth every penny, the Evora is really something special.

Almost every yoyo I ever get: put stock string on it (always a mistake), play with it a few throws, then decide I don’t like it very much, put it down and don’t play with it for a month. Happens with most yoyos because I usually win any yoyos I get, and I would never buy that particular yoyo. Also because I am used to only one yoyo.

Volt: First Impressions

This doesn’t feel like 67.5g

I thought Bi-Metals weren’t supposed to have float

Spins long though

Lets try some Matador

Ouch… Them spikes gonna take some getting used to

That SS ring is too shiny

The blast on this is silky

Grinds for days…

Is there an anti-gravity machine in this?

It shouldn’t feel this light

I’ll never trust specs again…

Its a nice feel

The Volt is a feather when compared to the Rainfly

Maybe i’ll nickname it feather… or heather… or leather…

Enough nicknames back to the play!

This thing is super smooth!

Only my Shout is smoother…

Spins only a little bit longer than most single metals

Time for some Matador fingerspin practice

Them spikes gonna take some getting used to

First impression of Gradient: I hate this. This is terrible. But I’ll say I like it cause it’s so expensive. Six months later: I love this. This is amazing. And it’s so cheap!

Too bad it’s not like the same time I through my Rainfly.

Me:

Dang, THIS LOOKS AWESOME!
Throws
It’s got pulsing vibe
Meh
I guess it’s okay for a used yoyo
Still spinning doe
Not bad
I guess I can keep it

and when I got my CLIFF:

Wow, it’s big, looks cool, feels cool, and…
throws
faints
wakes up
throws again
faints
wakes up
throws again
Is me in heaven?

You guys all seem to have more colorful first impressions with your yoyos than i do. When i get a new yoyo, my thought process usually goes like this.

Throws

“cool yoyo”

binds

And that’s pretty much it.

Eh I guess it’s a personality thing?

JohnnyJ, there’s a reason you think “cool yoyo”, though. You genuinely don’t recognize the thoughts that go through your head in a moment or two of throwing? You’re not mindful of the experience?

Not saying yoyos are unique in this. Almost anything throughout the day leaves us with sensory impressions and thoughts if we’re mindful of it. I can say to myself, “What are your next impressions of the keyboard you’re typing on,” and come up with a list of thoughts I have.

Gotta be “present” in this life, man! Think things! Allow the moment to filter into you and recognize it. And I’m not talking hippie crap either, I’m just saying, if you genuinely aren’t feeling the world around you, you’re missing out on… well… everything!
